While the Ouija board is seen widely as a dangerous spirit communication tool, it actually was originally a board game, and is even currently trademarked by Hasbro. The first patent on it was made in 1890 (not by Hasbro), and has a deep and fascinating history that I encourage you to research, as I could not possibly summarize it appropriately here.
Spirit board divination, however, has been around since at least 1100AD. These boards are meant to focus the conscious and subconscious to find answers- if you want to use it outside of its necronomical reputation. While there are countless tales of connections with spirits, and even many novels claimed to be written by spirits communicating through a board, all scientific studies have concluded that it's the user's subconscious directing the hand.
