In 1822, an American sailor purchased a "mermaid" from some Japanese sailors during his travels. The mermaid was grotesque in appearance, for it was actually the mash up of a taxidermized monkey and fish- but that did not shift the novelty of the find. By 1842, mermaid had been sold to a museum , where it was shown to none other than P.T. Barnum himself. Excited about the odd relic, Barnum quickly developed a publicity scheme that brought people from far and wide to see it. Today, Barnum's original Feejee mermaid has vanished (suspected to have been lost in one of the many fires that destroyed much of Barnum's collections), but many replicas have been made worldwide- some taxidermy, some simply paper mache.

And now, you can own your very own little Feejee mermaid- ethically sourced!

An original Siren Emylie design, these earrings are not only unique but made entirely in house. Created by a mermaid, these are meant to encourage you to cast aside the weight of humanity and live life with whimsical confidence.
