I think I was eleven or twelve years old when my family got our first fish tank, just a small 10 gallon tank that sat on my computer desk. My dad really didn't know how to care for it, but for a brief time it was stocked with a school of neon tetra and... you guessed it, zebra danio. I really enjoyed getting up on Saturday mornings to play World of Warcraft, where during loading screens I would just watch the fishes play. To this day, looking at them still fills me with that childhood nostalgia and joy. But did you know that zebra danio are also popular in laboratory studies? They share 70% of their genes with us, and have been used to understand muscular dystrophy, diabetes, and various cancers with excellent results. This design was actually commissioned by a friend who had been working in one of those labs and wanted jewelry to commemorate their time working with this charming fish.
