While often, not much is known about the intimate details of most oceanic species- I am very excited to share with you the incredibly fascinating novella that is the banded sea krait.
Famous for their potent neurotoxic venom, which was for years ribboned to be the most lethal in the world, the banded sea krait is actually an extremely docile creature- so much so that it is often that children in New Caledonia (the snake’s native grounds) actually play with them as if they are a toy. (Bonus fun fact, the people of New Caledonia call them tricot rayé- which translates to “striped sweater!”) Their venom IS very potent, but their bites- which are extremely rare- are usually dry (no venom release), and the venom acts very slowly and is very easy to treat as long as the person gets medical care. Overall, there is a 3% death rate of sea krait bites- which means your average household stairwell (responsible for 12,000 deaths annually) is more deadly than one of the most deadly snakes. But! Just as a little extra fun, kinda morbid fact- their venom does tend to cause cyanosis in humans (turns them blue)! So, unless you’ve been fatally bitten by a sea krait- I think it’s safe to say that you’ve no reason to be blue! [buh duh, tss]
This really is the tip of the iceberg on these fascinating animals though.
Sea kraits have very little sexual dimorphism that is visible to a basic glance- which is pretty normal for snakes. The females get larger, maximizing at a little over 4 feet, and the males maximizing at a little under 3 feet.
One of my favorite things about them is a visual trait- their paddle-like tail end! This helps aid not only with swimming, but also helps confuse predators with being unable to tell which end is the head, allowing the krait to dive head first into corals to hunt.
Speaking of hunting, I was surprised to find that their diet consists of almost entirely Congo eels and snake eels, and otherwise is just small fish. Males tend to eat more than one catch per hunt, whereas females usually only eat one. But both male and female snakes usually hunt alone, but sometimes gather to hunt in large groups alongside as a team with giant trevally (fish) and goatfish- the krait will drive hiding fish out of the corals, chasing them into the shoals for the larger fish to eat.
The banded sea krait is semi aquatic, often spending half of its adult lifespan on land. They apparently have an attraction to light, and are most often seen during the day- or at night, being distracted by the artificial lights of large coastal buildings such as hotels.
All in all, I also relate to being an ambivert attracted to light, large women, and who bites when startled.
